I complain a lot that fights don't seem 'real' in books or games.

So, prefacing this with: don't try this at home if you don't have to. Here's a really good guide:

He must've missed the part about kicking in the balls if given the chance. I know it's dirty, but in a fight, survival not honor is my priority.

Actually, as a martial arts instructor, I always tell my students forget the balls. Go for the knee.

Every guy from age 5 has an instinctive protection of them. They flinch when ever anything comes at them at high velocity.

The knee, on the other hand, only takes about 10 lbs of pressure to break. A good kick at the side of the knee will pop it out of joint and keep them from chasing.

Also, you don't have to get your feet up as high, so if you're not as flexible, or accurate, the knee is still a good target.

AND, people don't think to guard their knees.

A fight for me is much like a chess game. If you don't have an easy win ahead of you, it's about controlling the board. First targets, knees and elbows.

Failing that, thighs and upper arms are hard to move, and a few good bruising shots on each will lower their ability to respond. You have to do this QUICKLY though. So decide before the first blow is struck if it's about breaking the limb, or just slowing it down.

Keep their pieces from moving. Then, go for the head and torso.

Unfortunately, most people who are loosing at swinging, go for the grappling. So you'll have to change up strategy when they try to entangle you.

Escape/reverse/stalemate are your three options here.

IF you can escape, do so. They went here because they felt they had an advantage. Take them at their word, and get back to fighting them where they aren't confident.

If they do it poorly, maybe you can have the upper hand here. Reverse the grab. If a reversal isn't the natural response to something, go for the escape.

And finally, if you can't get out, and there is no reverse, just go for keeping it from getting worse. Make it so that as long as they grab you the can't hit you. If they have to disengage to strike, then you're back to where you started, with the upper hand.

Ok, way to much response. But, it's a topic near and dear to me.

I had a friend who was ex-special forces (Viet Nam). He let me look at one of the training guides they used. Ball-crushing techniques were in a lot of maneuvers, but they were always part of a combination that was about as "dirty" as you could make them. Eye-gouges, groins-stomps, throat-punches galore. They were designed for "I don't have to worry about tomorrow" type fighting. ie, the Viet Cong aren't going to sue you and you are not going to be tried for murder.

Hey Chris what martial art do you teach.

I'm an assistant instructor at my Judo Club.

I teach a style called Rie-Do. A relatively new style originating out of central Wisconsin. The instructor there had been in special forces and studied under several other area schools. Earning his Black Belt in TKD at a school in Marshfield, then starting his own style due to the blending he brough in from other disciplines.

Specifically, it's a blend of several traditional flavors. But the big three Karate (heavy Shotokan inflence), Judo (which we don't claim to be experts in) and JuJitsu are the most noticable. Main point of the style is Self Defense, but my students have done ok for themselves at tournaments.

Golke from the boards, is the real school head now. He does most of the instruction. But I still show up every now and then so I can feel important.
